Trashy Neighbors

They say hurricanes bring out the best and the worst in people. We learned that first-hand when we picked up the mess Gustav left behind. Everyone on our street piled "woody debris" (read: tree branches) in the median. We didn't want to kill our grass waiting for DPW to make the rounds. Everything was fine until our neighbors decided to use the debris pile for other things.

It started with a generator box and a bean bag.

Then they tossed some plastic kids toys and a crappy table. And as if that wasn't enough to send me right over the edge...

They added a mattress and boxspring to the mix. I couldn't believe it. It made me angry for so many reasons: 1) Most of the items could easily fit in the giant garbage and recycling bins the parish provides and picks up EVERY WEEK; 2) DPW workers skipped over piles of "mixed debris" so it took longer to clean up; 3) It was piled up on our end of the median, so it looked like our mess; and 4) It's just plain tacky!
I seriously considered making a sign that would have been right at home on one of my favorite blogs, but I was too lazy to go to the store for poster board. Luckily, they got the message after a DPW interview on my newscast and someone decided to clean up the mess. Well, sort of.

That's right. Someone had enough energy to create the Leaning Tower of Crap... but not enough to put it in the trash can where it belongs.

Thankfully the garbage guys picked it up a few days later.
